We offer a variety of restaurant door hinge types because one hinge does not maximize the efficiency or functionality of every traffic door panel type or application. The jamb thickness determines the degree of swing. All of our hinges rely on the force of gravity to return a swing door to its closed position. A spring may be used to assist in closing, holding a closed position in applications where positive or negative air pressure do not allow the door to return to center or to dampen the swing to reduce damage from jamb contact.
“E” Style Offset Pivot Gravity Hinge – Provides a 135 X 135 (270 total) degree swing pattern on a 4 inch jamb. Also a traditional design, it is used on sheet and core doors in light to medium applications. A variation on the “C” hinge which utilizes a similar welded pivot pin and a perpendicular axle with two hardened steel roller bearings that hang down from an L shaped corner bracket. The saddle that holds the door panel is below and parallel to a flat plate that has a hole for the pivot pin to pass through. An inverted groove is used to maintain the closed position. This pin is also centered about 3.5 inches from the jamb. A similar pin that holds the bottom of the door in place is centered 2 inches from the jamb. This hinge functions exactly like the “C" hinge described above. The centering position of the closed door is adjustable. This style of hinge always requires a cutout in the panel. Because of the same gravity issue, the heavier and wider a door is, the better they work. We do not use these hinges on doors that are less than 20” wide.
"C" Style Offset Pivot Gravity Hinge - Provides a 135 X 135 (270 total) degree swing pattern on a 4 inch jamb. A traditional design, it is used on sheet doors and core doors in light to medium applications. Utilizes a pivot pin welded to a saddle that holds the door panel and a perpendicular axle with two hardened steel roller bearings which ride on a flat plate and drop into a groove to maintain the closed position. This pin is centered about 3.5 inches from the jamb. A similar pin that holds the bottom of the swing door in place is centered 2 inches from the jamb. This is what is meant by offset. As the traffic door is pushed open, the door panel changes from a completely vertical plane to a slightly angled plane. The weight of the panel - or gravity - causes the door to return to the closed position. Any time that the door is not in the fully closed position, there is only one wheel in contact with the plate. The centering position of the closed door is adjustable. This style of hinge always requires a cutout in the panel. Because gravity plays a large part in the function of these hinges, the heavier and wider a door is, the better they work. We do not use these hinges on doors that are less than 20" wide.
XLP In-line Cam Hinge - Provides a 135 X 135 (270 total) degree swing pattern on a 4 inch jamb. Used on hollow, sheet, core and gate doors, light to medium duty applications. This is an in-line cam hinge, which means that the pivot point at both the top and bottom are the same 2 inch distance from the jamb. All hinge components are hidden inside of an extruded aluminum back spine. There are no cutouts in the panel except when a jamb guard is used. A bottom L bracket holds a cam which serves both as a pivot pin. It has three set screws for its centering adjustment. Above the cam pin inside of the bottom of the spine is a fixed mating cam. In the upper part of the spine there is a plug below a tempered coil spring. Above the spring is the top L bracket with a bushing on a pin. During operation, the spine and lower mating cam inside rotate on the pivot cam which causes the panel to rise. As it rises, the plug in the upper part of the spine causes the spring to compress against the bushing on the top L bracket. The spring expansion assists gravity, forcing the door to lower itself back to the closed position and center as the two lower cams are mated back in place. The attachment of the hinge to the panel is made with the spine. Because this hinge is inline and spring assisted, the weight and size of the panel is not critical and does not have any limitations on minimum size.
Top Mounted Gravity Hinge – Provides a 120 X 120 (240 total) degree swing pattern on a 4 inch jamb. Our original hinge design which is used exclusively on our Flexible AirGard, Uni-Flex and EconoClear doors for light to extra-heavy duty applications. The upper bracket uses an offset pivot bar that is welded to a triangular frame arm with a cross brace that is made of solid steel rod stock. This arm is contained in a pocket at the top of the door panel. The hinge has no bottom pivot which allows for the complete use of the opening width. As the door opens the end of the arm rises. The weight of the panel causes the door to return to its closed position.
